Dietplan6 can handle food tables from multiple sources and data from any source can be included in any recipe, menu or personal food diary without restriction. The database is pre-installed with the full set of UK food tables - all the foods and nutrients from the 5th and 6th Editions of McCance and Widdowson?s The Composition of foods plus all the published supplements, including Fatty acids and the Composition of Foods Integrated Data Set.

A free 30 day trial version of this software can be downloaded from the following site: http://www.foresoft.co.uk/index.html

? The software supports multiple sets of food tables so other national food tables can be used as well as, or instead of, the UK data. Users can add an unlimited number of their own foods into the food database.
? The database also includes Dietary Reference Values (COMA, 1991), Food Portion Sizes (MAFF 2nd Edition, 1993), Food Labelling Data (EC Directive, 1990) and the Nutritional Standards and Requirements for School Food (HMSO, 2008)
? New in version 6.50 are the Food Standards Agency (2007) front of pack, nutritional traffic-light labelling for recipes, as well as the IGD, Guideline daily amounts. Estimated vitamin losses (McCance & Widdowson, 6th Ed) and weight changes on cooking can also be entered.
? Nutrient values are calculated as soon as a food or ingredient is added, making it easy to observe the effects of adding or subtracting any item. The food tables can also be searched, for high or low values of a specified nutrient.
? The subjects of personal dietary assessments can have their details recorded, and an unlimited number of assessments can be saved for each individual. The personal details are used in the computation of the individual?s Dietary Reference Values, Body Mass Index, etc.
? Dietplan can be operated in a completely open manner with no restrictions on the user, or (Pro version only) an appointed system administrator can control access and specify the rights and privileges of individual, registered users. The settings and preferences selected by registered users are saved between sessions and are unaffected by the selections made by others.
? Results can be presented in the form of printed reports which can be a mixture of tabulated and free-form text and high-resolution graphics.
? The component parts of each report are fully user-selectable as are the nutrients to be reported and their order of presentation.
? Reports are produced in Portable Document Format (PDF). They can be previewed on-screen before being printed or saved in a file. Saved files can subsequently be recalled into Dietplan for review and/or (re)printing or can be viewed and printed using Adobe Reader, either stand-alone or from inside a web-browser.
? Results can be presented as high-resolution colour graphics. Histograms, pie charts and bar-graphs can all be selected and viewed for a range of different data, both individual and aggregated.
? The graphics can be printed individually on a wide range of supported monochrome and colour printers. They can also be saved in standard-format files that can be imported into desk-top publishing and other image-handling software.
? A foods / nutrients matrix can be viewed on screen as a scrolling spreadsheet-style display. This can also be printed out or exported in a standard-format file to a spreadsheet package, such as Excel, Quattro or Supercalc, or to a statistics package like SPSS or Minitab.
? There is a general purpose data import module that can be configured to import and store ingredient, recipe and menu data from a variety of sources such as the catering software packages Manna (Sanderson Ltd) and Menumark (Datasym UK Ltd).
? Dietplan is fully documented in its accompanying User Guide and on-line help is also available at every point in the program.

    Getting started!
Dietplan6 can be used for nutritional analysis of recipes, menu?s (meal plans) & personal diets. Before starting your work with this program, choose which type of analysis you are going to use.

In the Dietplan6 main menu window, select File then analysis type and click on Diet assessments (note the bottom bar of the screen tells you that diets assessments are selected).

To set up your own registration details, select File in the main Dietplan 6 menu (left hand side of screen) then New Analysis. The Registration pages will appear (see screenshot below). Enter your registration number (a number which you can use to find the record again, so something identifiable to you, and in a research setting, something which helps you to identify the participant) then press cancel to return to the screen on which you should enter data on either yourself or your clients details. Keep a note of these details so that you can find the file again. You also need to enter date of birth in the format dd month YYYY: hence 10 05 80 would be entered 10 May 1980.

Once complete, press continue. This will bring you into the Selection screen. This will contain all the records you entered under a particular registration number. Highlight the one marked New. Next choose whether or not you want Type = average intake and if so for how many days (good for average intake) or Type= Intake Diary and state max number of days meals etc (good for breakdown of nutrient content at each meal). You can also choose the DRV and Activity levels in this page by clicking on DRV?s (you need to do this or else you will have nothing to compare your report results to). Screenshot of what you will see is given below.

On completion of this page you will enter the composition page, where you can enter all your food and the quantities consumed.

To start adding foods, click on Add item, this will take you to the Add an item into analysis page. Enter the food you are looking for into Search (you can enter this by its name e.g. bread or by its code) and choose the appropriate portion size and quantity at the bottom. Click add then click on add item. Again, a screenshot is included below.

Continue this procedure until all food are entered, on completion press Save
Use the report and graph functions to personalise your own settling, you will need to save these if you change them from the default settings.

It is worthwhile exporting your data if there is any chance that you might want to go back and change things without having to re-enter it all again. To do this, choose the ?grid? button, and then ?export? on the right-hand side of the page. You will get a ?save as? pop up (see screenshot below) and can save all your entered data as a .csv file to open in Excel or similar and use as you wish, enter information into SPSS for analysis, modify entries in Dietplan or similar.

    To Add a Recipe
If you need to add a recipe for a meal or food which is not in the Dietplan6 database you can do this from the main menu, if you are still in the Composition window, click on Save and then Close.

In the Dietplan6 main menu window, click on File and then select analysis type, click on recipes & dishes (note the bottom bar of the screen tells you that recipes and dishes are selected).

In the Dietplan6 main menu, click on new analysis to add a new recipe or Open analysis to modify and existing one. This will bring you into the Selection window. Create a Recipe code (make sure you note this down, if it?s a meat dish it could be meat003 etc, work out a system that you can recall) press Continue, then you need to add a Name ? so you can remember what it is, and the number of portions or weight of product consumed.

Next, click on Continue and this brings you into a Composition window which you should use in the same way as you did in dietary assessment window, this time entering your foods to construct the recipe. When you are finished click on Save and then Close.

To re-enter your Personal Diet Assessment
Go back to main Dietplan6 Menu (left hand side), select File then click on Select analysis type and Diet assessments. ?Diet assessments? will appear at the bottom of the screen. Click on Open Analysis (to recall your original one or you can start a new assessment).

You will need to enter your original registration details, once you double click on Registration then click on the assessment you want, double click this and then Continue and this will bring you back into your list of foods. Enter all your foods, recipes etc in this way for the duration of your nutritional assessment.

Remember to hit Save when you finish.

    To Make A Report
To investigate the nutritional adequacy of your intake, click on Report. You can adapt and modify the items to include in this report by using the Report window, then by clicking on Design to modify your report.

A Report will now appear, remember to save this somewhere on your memory key or h drive so that you can reload on another computer.

    Customising your report
The generic report can be 3 or more pages long. If you want to reduce the number of tables or make separate reports on the macro and micro-nutrients for example, you can do so by clicking on Design in the report window. Deselect any tables or information which you do not require, and save your new settings under a filename unique to you, exporting to your H: drive or memory stick so that you can re use these. It will be saved in the form of a .pdf file

How to import images from your report into a word file
Open your report using Adobe Acrobat from the tool bar click on the select image icon, use the drop down menu to select text / select images/select tables which you can then import/paste into your word document and use in your paper/case study.
